Why Protecting Women and Children is a Man’s Greatest Duty

Some lessons in life stay with you forever. For me, one of the first came from my father, a quiet but powerful man who believed in honor, respect, and responsibility. He taught me, long before I fully understood it, that real strength is not about power or dominance. It is about protection.

Growing up as the first boy in a household filled with ten females, my mother, sisters, and grandmother, I watched my father live by this code every day. He worked the land as a tenant farmer, providing for us despite the hardships, never once complaining about the weight on his shoulders. But his message to me was always clear: “A man’s duty,” he said, “is to protect the women and children in his life, not because they are weak, but because love demands it.”

When he passed away far too early, that responsibility became real for me overnight. I saw firsthand what it meant to step up when the world felt heavy. My mother carried us forward with courage in a male-dominated world, and I have learned his lesson with me into adulthood.

Years later, as I raised three children alone, I understood what my father meant in ways only life experience can teach you. Protecting women and children goes beyond physical safety. It is about creating an environment where they feel respected, valued, and free to thrive. It is about setting an example of integrity, compassion, and strength grounded in humility.

That is why I wrote A LOT OF PEOPLE SLEPT HERE. My story is filled with hardship and triumph, humor and heartache, but above all, it carries the values my father passed down. Character matters, responsibility matters, and standing up for others, especially those who depend on you, matters most of all.

In a world that often confuses strength with aggression, his lesson is one we cannot afford to lose. Real men protect. Real men respect. Real men lead with honor. Moreover, it starts, as it did for me, with the values we carry forward from the generations before us.
